ENGINE / DRIVETRAIN. The Africa Twin has a water-cooled, single-overhead cam, eight-valve, parallel-twin engine configuration, and for good touring capability, displacement is 1,084cc, achieved via 92.0 and 81.5 mm bore and stroke figures. The cylinder sleeves are aluminum, helping to minimize weight.

The CRF1000L Africa Twin’s 998cc parallel twin power plant draws heavily on Honda’s CRF250R/450R competition machines, using the same four-valve Unicam head design for compact overall dimensions.

Perhaps the direct injection engine wasn’t intended for the Africa Twin at all, but a whole new engine for the mid-sized adventure bike.
